Taj Mahal: The crown jewel of Agra and one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Taj Mahal is a symbol of eternal love. Built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, this white marble mausoleum is renowned for its stunning architecture, intricate carvings, and beautiful gardens. The Taj Mahal is especially mesmerizing at sunrise and sunset when the light casts a golden hue on the marble, creating a magical atmosphere.
Agra Fort: Just 2.5 kilometers from the Taj Mahal, the Agra Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a testament to the grandeur of the Mughal Empire. This massive red sandstone fort was both a military stronghold and a royal residence. Within its walls, you'll find a blend of both Hindu and Islamic architecture, with notable structures like the Jahangir Mahal, Diwan-i-Khas, Diwan-i-Am, and the Sheesh Mahal.
Fatehpur Sikri: Approximately 40 kilometers from Agra, Fatehpur Sikri is a deserted city that was once the capital of the Mughal Empire under Emperor Akbar. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is an architectural marvel, with structures like the Buland Darwaza, Panch Mahal, and the Tomb of Salim Chishti. Despite being abandoned due to water scarcity, the city remains well-preserved and offers a glimpse into the splendor of the Mughal era.
Itimad-ud-Daulah’s Tomb: Often called the "Baby Taj," Itimad-ud-Daulah’s Tomb is considered a precursor to the Taj Mahal. This mausoleum, built by Empress Nur Jahan for her father, Mirza Ghiyas Beg, features intricate marble lattice work, pietra dura inlay, and beautiful gardens. The tomb’s design and architecture reflect a transition from the red sandstone of earlier Mughal buildings to the white marble that would later characterize the Taj Mahal.
Mehtab Bagh: Located across the Yamuna River from the Taj Mahal, Mehtab Bagh is a charbagh (four-quartered) garden complex that offers one of the best views of the Taj Mahal. Originally built by Emperor Babur, this garden was later refurbished by Shah Jahan. It’s an ideal spot for photographers, especially during sunset, when the Taj Mahal is beautifully reflected in the river.
Akbar’s Tomb, Sikandra: Situated in the suburbs of Agra, Akbar’s Tomb is the final resting place of Emperor Akbar, one of the greatest rulers of the Mughal Empire. The tomb is an impressive structure, surrounded by lush gardens, and showcases a blend of different architectural styles, including Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain motifs. The gateway to the tomb is particularly striking, with its intricate carvings and inlay work.
Chini Ka Rauza: Chini Ka Rauza is the mausoleum of Afzal Khan, a poet and the Prime Minister in the court of Shah Jahan. This lesser-known site is famous for its Persian-style architecture and the colorful glazed tiles (chini) that decorate the exterior, giving the tomb its name.
Agra Shopping Market: Agra is also known for its bustling markets, where you can shop for handicrafts, leather goods, marble inlay work, carpets, and jewelry. Popular shopping areas include Sadar Bazaar, Kinari Bazaar, and Shahganj Bazaar. Don’t forget to try the famous Agra petha, a sweet delicacy made from ash gourd, available in various flavors.
